The Carolingian Empire: Tradition and Innovation in the Context of the Changing Paradigms of the Historical Representation

The book seeks to illustrate the construction of the Carolingian self-representation in the 9th century in the context of the developments in the views of history. It argues that the history of the Carolingian dynasty acquired the canonical form in which we know it now relatively late, in the 9th century. It argues that the image of the Frankish kings' dynasty changed over the whole period of their rule and that the dynasty's place in history and the representation of its past was reinvented in the course of it being in power in the 9th and 10th centuries. It shows, first, how the idea of the dynasty itself was being formed during the first three generations, Pippin the Short, Charlemagne and Louis the Pious, and second, how significantly these temporary representations were revised by historians like Richer of Reims and Ademar of Chabannes.
