Deux puits cuvelés à Lieusaint, ZAC de La Pyramide (Seine-et-Marne)

Abstract : Situated at a few kilometres north-west of the town of Melun (Seine-et-Marne) the new development of La Pyramide has, since the winter of 2001-2002, given insight into Prehistoric settlement spanning over 14 hectares on the banks of the stream "le Eu des Hauldres". Excepting a Neolithic Villeneuve-Saint- Germain occupation and a few elements dating from the early Late Bronze Age (Rhin-Suisse France orientale), most of the finds date from the end of the Hallstatt and the Late La Tene period. The two wells presented here are situated in an area where a drainage system is to be built to dry out the land before construction. This building project underlines the geological and hydrological nature of this zone that seems to have played a major role during Prehistory. The area is particularly waterlogged due to the gentle slope of the terrain, the high water table and the stream that probably explain the absence of storage pits in an area where above ground grain stores are present. The high water table has preserved many organic elements, particularly wood, just under the surface (about a metre) and also explains why the wells are relatively shallow (a maximum depth of 2,40 m).
