L’utilisation du corail sur le casque de la grotte des Perrats à Agris (Charente)

Abstract : The Agris helmet is one of the major pieces of Early Celtic Art. Its decoration is richly embellished with pieces of coral. Study of this material, and of its use on this prestige object, allows the chaîne opératoire from the finished object back to the primary material to be reconstructed. It is thus possible to create a typology of the pieces of coral used, and to determine the means (both the techniques and the tools) used to prepare and finish these pieces. It is equally possible to consider how the various pieces were fixed to the helmet. All the activities concerned in the procurement and use of this costly material can thus be demonstrated. Apart from such technical considerations, it is also possible to consider the role of coral as a component of the iconography displayed on the helmet. Motifs for which coral was employed are limited in number and were thus carefully selected, not only on the Agris helmet, but more generally on other coral-inlaid Celtic objects.
