An die Urnen, Schweizerinnen! Die Erfindung der Wählerin im eidgenössischen Wahlkampf von 1971

Abstract : While the introduction of women's suffrage in Switzerland has been well researched for several decades, little is known about how the resulting doubling of the electorate changed Switzerland's political life. How did women become voters or even candidates? How can their new political role as a now fully entitled voter in Swiss society in the 1970s be understood? This article looks at the invention of the Swiss female voter on the basis of the 1971 federal election campaign. In the run-up to the elections, the Swiss public was initially uncertain about one unknown aspect of the election: the expected female voting behaviour, which was the subject of numerous debates and surveys. In order to channel the presumed unpredictability of voting behaviour and, above all, to counteract the expected female abstinence from voting, the federal authorities and political parties agreed on the need for more political education directed at women. Finally, the political parties designed a kind of special campaign for women in order to win them over to their candidates. In this way, political elites helped to define the new female voters as a separate group during the election campaign. Ironically, as a result, the traditional bipolar gender model was confirmed for some time despite the introduction of women's voting rights.
