Recherche sur la morphologie des vases de La Tène

Abstract : As with other everyday products, pottery can be used in the definition of an archaeological culture. In this study, the form of some La Tène vases will be considered, entirely independently of their size, assumed function, or method of manufacture. In this case it is easier to compare the vessels by graphic means, than to resort to statistics derived from tables of measurements, which cannot adequately describe the profiles of these vessels. This approach allows comparisons to be made on the basis of the profiles of the various vessels, once they have all been reduced to the same size. The carinated beakers of the Champagne, as well as the pedestal-footed vases from the same area and the lenticular vessels from central Europe (Linsenflaschen) are characteristic of the decorative grammar of the Celts. In each class of vessel, the maximum diameter occurs either below, or above, the mid- height of the vessel. The desired effect is accentuated further by the addition of a narrow foot in the case of the Champagne vessels, or by an exceedingly long and thin neck in the case of the central European series. These two types of vessel are sometimes found in association. The elaborate painted decoration of the Champagne pedestal vases, like the central European lathe-turned wooden spouted flagons decorated with bronze, which they closely resemble in shape, also underscores the desire to produce particular decorative forms as represented by these related classes of vessel.
