Un dernier moment de folie créatrice : le répertoire ornemental de la céramique dans le nord-est du massif central au IIe siècle avant J.-C.

Abstract : The view is frequently expressed that, after the 3rd century BC, La Tène craftsmanship shows a decline in both its range and quality. Painted pottery of the 2nd century BC inspired by observation of the natural world provides an exception to this rule, and one that is strengthened as further discoveries are made (the most recent will be considered here), particularly in the north-east of the Massif central. These new finds allow previously published stylistic analyses to be refined. This painted pottery displays a repertory of decorative elements that are at once coherent and independent, and which can be fitted perfectly logically into the evolution of the La Tène cultural matrix. Stylistic changes are also clearly apparent through the second century BC, and this is notably the case in discoveries from the Basse-Auvergne. The development of this tradition can be set alongside the formation of regional political entities which is a characteristic of the end of the temperate European Iron Age. Its sudden disappearance coincides with the important social changes that also led to the development of the oppida.
