ESPACES ÉCONOMIQUES ET APPROVISIONNEMENT MINÉRAL AU PALÉOLITHIQUE MOYEN DANS L'AIRE LIGURO-PROVENÇALE

Abstract : The variability of hunter-gatherer lithic procurement strategies is partly mediated by the type of geological environment occupied. Mobile populations have to adapt their procurement to the availability and quality of raw material within the landscape. The pattern of behaviour recognized by many scholars for the Western European Middle Palaeolithic underlines homogeneous procurement strategies, closely associated with local raw materials and with the transportation of few items restricted to an area of 100 km. In this paper, we propose to reassess this schema using the example of the Liguro-Provençal region, characterized by its geological diversity and compartmentalisation. Our results demonstrate notably the transportation of raw material over distances greater than 200 km. This reaffirms the importance of adopting larger study areas and developping interregional and transnational collaborations.
