Un opéra de répliques ? La musique des dialogues dans Les Tontons flingueurs

Abstract : Punchlines in movies are not only words. The actors' voices, vocal inflexions, rhythm and prosody choices, play a great role in the efficiency and celebrity of a movie line. Les Tontons flingueurs (1963) is a French movie which has become a cult movie, particularly because of its dialogues by the famous Michel Audiard. In this paper, we study some of these lines as if they were songs, since their "music" actually is at stake in their success. That inquiry will be conducted considering three scales for analysis : that of the line, as a minimal element of dialogue; that of the monologue, since several of the movie monologues are known by heart by the many contemporary afficionados of Les Tontons; and that of the scene. In that last step of the analysis, we are able to show how each character, having his own speech and musical register, is similar to a character in an opera. The musical features of the lines thus act in much the same way as musical themes in an opera, defining - as much as the actual words - the evolution of relations between the protagonists.
