Abstract : The field of positive psychology surfaced some twenty years ago under the initial impulse of Seligman and Csikszentmihalyi. It can be defined as the study of the conditions and processes that contribute to the flourishing or optimal functioning of people, groups, and institutions. This 4th wave of contemporary scientific psychology is particularly focused on the empirical study of optimal human development. It also brings to light the theory of optimal, or autotelic experience ("flow"), developed in the 1970s by Csikszentmihalyi. However, to date, relatively little work in French has been devoted to the contribution of positive psychology to the specific field of adult education. Therefore, after a focus on the emergence of the concern for optimal human development, followed by a critical examination of positive psychology, the core of this paper deals with the concept of autotelic experience, particularly with regard to the social dimension of learning readiness (« learnance ») and the persistence of a will to understand and comprehend throughout life.
