From Fez to Pisa : Negotiating the Peace in 1358

Résumé

From the middle of the 14th Century, Merinids assert their power and achieve to impose their domination all over the Maghrib. This new situation brings difficulties to Pisans, who had a privileged position in Ifrîqiya, and induce them to take initiatives, by sending an embassy to Fez to negociate with the Merinid sultan Abû ‘Inân a peace and commercial treatise. The text of this treatise, now hold by the Archivio di Stato di Pisa, is preserved in double version (arabic and latin), to which is added a later italian version. It reveals all the process of the negociations, the ratification and the confirmation, begun in Fez and concluded in Pisa. It stresses on the plurality of diplomatic agents as well, in particular on the work of the chancery and the ambassadors to conclude this treatise, by which Pisa hopes to gain profit and preserve its commercial interests in Maghrib.
