« Mathématiques védiques », espoirs fin de siècle d'une modernité alternative

Abstract : This article tells the story of the « Vedic Mathematics » promoted by Narendra Modi’s Hindu Nationalist government, starting from the posthumous publication authored by an Indian freedom fighter and religious figure, following its diffusion in the English speaking world in Transcendental Meditation institutions and ending with the controversial political and commercial phenomena it has been in India in the last thirty years. Wrongly understood, as « traditional mathematics », « Vedic Mathematics » rather seems to testify to the constant will to create another non-western and religious modernity.
