Le football saisi par les médias

Abstract : This outline of a research program is part of a larger work on the transformations of the joumalistic field since the beginning of the 1980s and the relationship it keeps with other social spaces. Based on the study of the media coverage of two professional sports – football and, and in a more secondary way, basketball –, the point is, on one hand, to measure up the transformations that have been affecting the under-field of sport journalism since the beginning of the 1980s, whether it concerns its structure, the recruiting of reporters, the constraints (mainly of economical order) of production and modes of handling sportive information (increase in expertise and development of a more « critical » conception). On the other hand, it seems necessary to analyse how the media, mostly télévision networks, have become a strategic space in the production of « sports events », which affects the very functioning of national and international spaces of professional sports. For example, they contribute more and more to public représentations of sports shows and favour économic logic sometimes over sportive logic among professional sports.
