Le discours rapporté à statut indéterminé

Abstract : This paper deals with a particular form of reported speech (RS) that we call ‘reported speech with undefined status.’ This form, frequently used in journalistic texts, is ambiguous as it shares some features with reported speech but is also often difficult to differentiate from the journalist’s own discourse. Indeed, the reported clause appears to be part of the journalist’s discourse as it is unmarked typographically (by inverted commas for example) and the reporting clause is parenthetical, placed in mid or final position. The contrastive approach across French, English and Romanian reveals the difficulty of characterizing and classifying such a form in relation with the traditional categories of RS using criteria of punctuation, position of the reporting clause, sequence of tenses... The description of such utterances and the analysis of the various operations of location across the reported and the reporting clauses reveal the specificity of the form, namely its close relation with the journalist’s discourse. The study of the various translations, by indirect speech, indirect speech with inverted commas, utterances introduced by prepositional phrases such as ‘according to’ or simply integration into the journalist’s discourse, confirms the form’s fundamental ambiguity.
