Southern French research has produced a specific definition of the oppidum: fortified villages built with stone and earth, with its dense and standardized plan of insula and lanes, and the introduction of the rectangular module, often with adjoining walls. The long tradition of protohistoric and early history has been exploring these objects for a long time, although significant differences in the state of research exist from one department to another.. We will study the eastern part of southern France, from the area of influence of Marseille to the Western Southern Alps. Our work will consist of two points: First, a new mapping of all known protohistoric hilltop settlements between the Rhône, the Mediterranean, the High Alps, and the Italian border. In a second step will be presented zooms on specific sites of each altitudinal space, especially establishments with recent field data. We will highlight in this part, the presentation of lesser known fortified sites. It is now appropriate to raise the question of the actual function of these fortified places ,not only because of their different morphologies, but also because of the diversity of geographic and topographical contexts: from dense settlements with a real vocation to urban living in the Mediterranean area, to more casual refuge sites, sites for ritual purposes, or even purely functional (pastoral enclosures?) for more distant an d mountainous areas.
