La fabrique des nouvelles routes de la mémoire au Chili. Spatialités, circulations et frictions dans la région de Valparaíso

Abstract : In Chile, the collective memory of the State violence perpetrated during the military dictatorship (1973-1990) is at present a dissonant and controversial heritage: the idea of devoting spaces to that memory arouses resistance and catalyses controversy. On the basis of an ethnographic survey carried out in 2018, this article addresses the collective construction of a “road of memory” in and around Valparaíso. It interrogates the work involved in seeing places that are the spatial frameworks for the memory of a violent past as part of a network, and the way they are physically and symbolically marked. The first section analyses how those committed to laying out this road work along with the territory, and the second covers the intersection between heritage and memory registers that this involves. The third section follows the genesis of an unusual memorial chosen to be installed at each of the sites along the road, examining its reception by many different people and the frictions that its installations caused in various places in the region. More broadly, the article suggests judging memorialisation projects against the question of spatial justice and the territorial belonging of the groups that back them.
