Voir et montrer la mort animale

Abstract : "The acts of making visible or invisible, hiding and showing, are particularly significant issues surrounding animal death. If one frequently considers slaughtering as an ellipse between animal and meat, practices such as sacrifice or hunting, on the contrary, seemingly need to make visible and acknowledgeable the act of putting to death. The statuses of death (“good to see” or “necessary to hide”) are today facing the issue of massive media uses of animals’ deaths, through images with powerful impact, e.g. animalist movements videos and TV broadcasts. Experiencing animal death may also affect the researcher, who is bound to question his/her own relation with the action of seeing and showing animal death. At the reflective crossroad between our own scientific practices and examples drawn from an abundant audio-visual, literary, and artistic production on the topic, we will question the different regimes of images of animals’ death and the relations between the visible and the invisible, the showable and the hidden."
