Cîteaux -Commentarii cistercienses, t. 69, fasc

Abstract : The Scriptures in the Writings of William of Saint-Thierry Thanks to the data on the works of William of Saint-Thierry collected in BiblIndex (the online index of quotations and scriptural references in the Fathers of the Church) – they will be available online in 2020 – we have been able to cary out a quantitative survey on his biblical usage, illuminated where necessary by qualitative remarks. If William’s discourse on the Scriptures, like his practice of defloratio, places him in the direct line of monastic exegesis, impregnated with a comprehensive knowledge of the Psalms, our author also emphasizes the pedagogical function of the biblical text in the moral and spiritual life, and its argumentative role in theological reflection. This pluralistic approach establishes a biblical profile that is truly monastic, but also atypical because of the preponderance it gives to the Epistle to the Romans. At the macroscopic scale, there is the great constancy of a limited biblical substratum, influenced by fidelity to patristic sources; but the discrete evolutions are perceptible rather in the detail of the co-occurrences, considered here with reference to Exodus 33 :20.
