Un atelier de métallurgie du bronze et du fer à Pompéi ? Interprétations et terminologie

Résumé

Excavating one of the shops inserted in the complex of commercial and production spaces located outside Porta Ercolano in Pompeii, in front of the Villa delle Colonne a mosaico, different elements suggested the existence of a metallurgical workshop. At the time of the eruption, it was being dismantled and only part of the structures — casting pit, masonry table, possible annealing furnace — were not destroyed. This paper aims at studying these structures, in order to determine whether, beyond gaps and uncertainties, it is possible to interpret this complex as a workshop processing different metals, dedicated to the production of iron and copper alloys objects. This paper also provides an update on the terms to be used in several languages (French, English, German, Italian, Spanish), to describe these production structures.
