The private and public normative orderings of the modern firm: Industrial pluralism in a history of organizational thought perspective

The development of the theory of the firm has included only limited insight into the legal and political nature of business enterprises, and the inquiry into the nature of normative orderings has been obscured. By normative ordering, we mean a regulatory standard regarding industrial relations applicable for a given time to real entities—here, firms. This article contributes to bridging this theoretical gap by examining the historical and institutional evolution of firms concerning industrial pluralism and by focusing on the accuracy of the study of the entanglement of private and public normative orderings in firms.
Le développement de la théorie de la firme s’est souvent affranchi d’une analyse de la nature légale et politique des entreprises si bien que la réflexion sur la nature des ordres normatifs est elle-même demeurée marginale. Par ordre normatif, nous entendons un standard de régulation des relations industrielles qui s’applique pour une période donnée à des entités réelles, ici aux firmes. Cet article contribue à la littérature sur le pluralisme industriel en proposant une analyse des évolutions institutionnelles et historiques des firmes et en mettant en exergue une forme d’intrication des ordres publics et privés dans les entreprises.
