In his last film released so far, Hugo (2011), Martin Scorsese reiterates the fundamental ambiguity characterizing the relationship between his cinema and the society which has generated it. This article intends to examine this question, through the concept of myth. In fact, this movie was built on two fundamental myths: one the one hand, the technological myth, to whom Scorsese pay tribute here, while showing the scary side of this ideological posture with regards to the future of cinema ; and on the other hand, the myth of the Great Man, that allows him to put in perspective its own destiny, the way he built himself as a cineaste, his present actions in the public arena, but also the memory that he will left behind in the history of cinema. As is generally the case with his work, the relation to the myth is here highly personal, and abounds with the recurrent obsessions of the filmmaker.

Dans le dernier de ses films sortis à ce jour, Hugo Cabret (Hugo, 2011), Martin Scorsese réitère l’ambiguïté fondamentale qui caractérise la relation historique de son cinéma avec la société qui l’a généré, et que cet article se propose d’interroger ici par le biais du concept de mythe. Deux mythes fondamentaux traversent littéralement le propos de ce film : le mythe technologique d’une part, auquel Scorsese rend ici un fervent hommage tout en mettant en relief le versant angoissant de cette posture idéologique au regard de l’avenir du cinéma ; et le mythe du Grand Homme d’autre part, qui lui permet de mettre en perspective sa propre destinée, sa construction en tant que cinéaste, ses actions présentes sur la scène publique, mais aussi la trace que laissera son nom dans l’histoire du cinéma. Comme toujours dans son œuvre, le rapport au mythe est donc ici éminemment personnel, et toujours décliné au prisme d’obsessions récurrentes dans le discours du cinéaste.
