L'usage mixte de l'image fixe et de l'image animée dans le domaine de l'enseignement, du début du XXe siècle à la Seconde Guerre mondiale

Abstract : Since the advent of the art of filmmaking, the use of animated images was considered by educationalists and teachers as a new tool for achieving their goals. That is the reason why, at the very same time a lot of so-called “spectacular” films were produced, educational and tutorial films began to appear and to be used in a huge set of various disciplines. As a result, numerous thinking in the field of pedagogy were carried out. Nonetheless, even if using cinema in teaching and education was the logical following of the use of traditional visual aids (models, globes, wall maps, blackboards, slides, stereoscopies, photographs…), academic circles appeared in the first time very reluctant. Instigators of this new tool worked on demonstrating the specific value of cinema – and hence of animated images – with regard to the other visual aids in general and fixed imaging in particular, two practices that were advocated simultaneously. All along the twenties and thirties, disputes about that question are particularly intense and offer a significant example of a cross use of fixed and animated images.
