L’exploitation du marbre à Roquebrun au XVIIe siècle : de la fenêtre à meneau au retable de marbre

Abstract : Even less well known than the Caunes-Minervois marble quarries are those at Roquebrun, which have never been studied. The scarce usable documents concerning them date from the 17th century. However, they allow us to piece together their history. Exploited by a family of local builders, the Dumas, these quarries attracted interest from various people. Italian craftsmen planned to use them to compete with those at Caunes, but without success. With the arrival of the Jaumon brothers, the work intensified. Roquebrun marble was then reasonably successful, but very little remains from this production. The rare preserved pieces allow us to identify marble specific to Roquebrun, and recognise that numerous pieces previously attributed to Caunes-Minervois were in fact from Roquebrun.
