La litanie à travers les genres de discours. Une iconicité de l’extra-ordinaire

Abstract : Outside its religious context, litany is often perceived as boring and monotonous repetition. Here I show that its appearancein profane discourseconveys a function of ritualisation or of pertaining to the extraordinary. Whether religious or secular, its amplified form is always used to perform one or more solemn speech acts (prayer, promise, commemoration, acknowledgement, etc.). Itsinformative “weakness”thusappears inversely proportional to itsperformativepower.
