Le football et les appartenances locales en France : comment ce sport est suivi et le sens qu’on lui donne

Abstract : How can one explain on one hand the thickness of the bond that links a club to territory for some who follow football and, on the other, the fact that certain supporters choose to support other teams or not to link their passion for this sport to spatial belonging at all? In order to respond to this question, this article presents data from an on-line survey (between May and August 2016) into the link between professional football and territorial belonging in France. Having first presented information about how this sport is followed by the 1000 or so people who responded, the text is centred upon the social meaning given to their practices by each one, targeting in particular the significations given to the local, the national and Europe. Finally, an inter-regional comparison of the data explores further the meaning given to each of these territorial scales.
