Ruralités post-carbone : Milieux, échelles et acteurs de la transition énergétique

Abstract : The transitioning of our social and economic system towards low and no-carbon energy production is currently an issue of global concern. It affects urban and rural populations alike, and prompts a thoroughgoing re-examination of the relationships between our human institutions and renewable local resources. This work explores the various methods of transitioning to an energy-based model, in which the reconfiguring of relations between resources and territories opens up a new role for rural areas, the locus of new human and economic alliances. Drawing on the work of territorial stakeholders, designers, teachers and researchers, the issues surrounding energy transition processes can be divided into three main areas: — “Milieux” points up the unique energy-production potential of each geographic area through their natural resources and the reorganisation of lifestyles. — “Scales” examines the transcalar dimension of the energy issue in the modes of inhabiting and ways of designing human settlements. — “Stakeholders” identifies the many institutional connections which are contributing to the loosening of the stranglehold of the current systems. The latest work in the Rural Space & Spatial Design (erps) network collection reports on the network’s seventh conference, organised by the Labex research initiative Architecture, ae&cc (Architecture, Environment and Constructive Cultures), the National School of Architecture of Grenoble, the Grenoble Alpes University and the National School of Architecture of St Étienne.
