Le pais amphithalês : l’autre enfant d’Athéna

Abstract : The pais amphithalês was a young boy chosen because he belonged to a family in which his father and his mother were still alive, to perform some religious rites. Although the pais amphithalês has long been considered as a guarantee of both agricultural and human fertility, this article aims at suggesting another interpretation: taking into account the Athenian context, especially that of the 5th century B.C. (when the myths of Theseus and Erichthonios were forcefully asserted), we shall see the symbolic links that the pais amphithalês maintained with Athena, the city and autochthony.
