Entre christianisme et altermondialisme : le syndicat paysan basque elb

Abstract : Emerging from a combination of three factors (Catholicism, an ethnic identity and an occupation), ELB, the Basque branch of the French Peasants' Confederation, has an original interpretation of how the local and global spheres interact. Owing to the conditions of its birth, its activists' itineraries and its structural characteristics, this farmers' union supports anti-globalism even if this means siding with organizations representing heterogeneous interests and identities. From a normative viewpoint, the ELB's position at the junction of several social causes has led it to “globalize” its arguments, evidence of this being its participation in international networks. Locally, ELB has an ambivalent relation with farming institutions in the Basque provinces; it resorts to alternative forms of actions.
