Le lit vide des funérailles civiques athéniennes

Abstract : During the Athenian procession in honour of the war dead, described by Thukydides, an empty bed makes obvious the missing of those agathoi, whose bodies were lost for ever. Though any female relative of the deceased was permitted to cry, this bed can suggest the prothesis and the play devoted to women in the patrios nomos.
