Retour au stamnos attique : quelques réflexions sur l’usage et le répertoire

Abstract : Which is the common denominator of the assured uses of the stamnos, the ritual and the funerary ? The comparison of the most homogeneous and best-known group of images of women acting around a cult-image of Dionysos, by the Villa Giulia-Painter, with those of other artists throws into bold relief the essential elements of the ritual. Thence the hypothesis that this domestic ritual of wine expressed the hope of some sort of life after death. The comparison of the repertoire of images on stamnoi with the standard decorations on vases of more funerary or more sympotic purpose (respectively small amphorae and kraters) confirms their special status as vases intended – in Greece as well as in Etruria – for a solemn use beyond the symposium.
