A photographer amongst ethnographers. How decisions are made in prescribing treatment for individuals under psychiatric care

A team of ten ethnographers and one photographer set out on a joint venture to explore the scientific and artistic aspects of care for the psychiatrically-disabled in the context of social work, healthcare, and family life. The team was brought together by a commitment to a singular methodology : reflexive ethnography. Having reviewed the conditions of this particular collaboration, the article goes on to emphasize and discuss the fruits of the team’s collective effort — chief among these, the construction of scientific and artistic objects and the dissemination of research results to multiple publics. It traces how, between 2011 and 2015, the collaboration took root and what it produced through, on the one hand, sharing a common object of study — the everyday consequences of psychiatric disability — and, on the other hand, a commitment to reflexivity regarding the use of tools and practices that are, at first glance, incompatible.
Réunis autour d’une même méthode - l’ethnographie réflexive - et autour d’une problématique construite sur la prise en charge familiale, médico-sociale et sanitaire des personnes décrites comme relevant du soin psychiatrique, dix ethnographes et un photographe ont mis en place une démarche conjointe originale aux accents artistiques et scientifiques. Après avoir restitué les conditions de possibilité d’une telle coopération, l’article insiste sur les bénéfices que l’équipe en a retirés, depuis la construction des objets - scientifiques et artistiques - jusqu’à la diffusion « mixte » des résultats, en passant par la nécessaire objectivation des méthodes d’enquête. Il retrace la façon dont, entre 2011 et 2015, une telle alliance a pu se nouer et ce qu’elle a produit d’une part, sur l’appréhension d’un objet commun - les conséquences quotidiennes des troubles psychiques invalidants - et d’autre part, sur la réflexivité d’enquêteurs aux outils et pratiques apparemment éloignés.
