Navires et navigations dans le delta du Rhône à l’époque romaine

Abstract : This article presents an overview of the types of ships that have could frequented the very particular sailing space of the Rhône Delta between the 1 st century BC and the 4 th century AD. This research is partly based upon ancient literary and iconographic sources but mainly upon archaeological vestiges, with the presentation of a large corpus of shipwrecks containing the ensemble of available and currently published documentation on the subject. In order to shine specific light on certain issues tackled in this article, written and iconographic sources of the medieval and modern periods are also examined for complementary and comparative purposes. This article aims to reveal new research perspectives in the field of nautical archaeology for the pursuance of archaeological investigations in the entire area of the Rhône Delta.
