Une étude des modèles politiques et sociaux de l’ibadisme médiéval

Résumé

In the last twenty years, the history of Ibadism has experienced real breakthroughs, thanks to the publication of new sources and critical studies. Following Patricia Crone, some scholars have tried to understand the theory of the imamate in the light of early Islamic political thought. John Wilkinson rebuked the portrayal of Ibadism as a monolithic and unchanged community and conversely insisted on the “madhhabization” process that progressively fixed the law. This book follows the same line of comparative political and social inquiry. Its first aim is to provide a picture of the transformations experienced by the Ibadi communities during medieval times. We focus on their political and social models and question the notions of political dissidence (khurūj), political consultation (shūra) and the imamate. We also pay attention to the territories where Ibadism struck root and how settlements and other social structures were organized. Finally, we examine the relations of coexistence and competition with the other sects and how rival orthodoxies - in particular Sunni Islam - expanded.
