Pygmées et Amazones dans la Silve I, 6 de Stace

Abstract : Thanks to different documents, it's possible to show that Statius, when likening in Silvae I, 6 dwarves and women performing as gladiators in Domitian's games to Pygmies and Amazons, is in keeping with the emperor's purpose. The presence in the arena of theses mythical peoples, leaving at the very end of the earth, was a way of celebrating Domitian's victories and his domination of the whole world. It could also symbolise, through the revival of the myth, the revival of time secured by the power of the princeps, celebrated as a new Saturnus.
