Musical Problems in the Zhouli 周礼

Abstract : The 周禮 Zhouli is an important text of Chinese antiquity of uncertain datation in which some obscure contents have yet not been fully elucidated, as for Greek statements, for example in musical problems stated by Aristotle (Προβλήματα Problemata physica) of the 3rd century BCE. Following up on my previous papers about ancient music in China (ISGMA, 2006, and Topoi International Workshop, Berlin, 2011), the aim of the present paper is to clarify obscure statements of this kind:“凡樂,圜钟为宫,黄钟为角,太蔟为征,姑洗为羽”(Ordinarily in music, yuanzhong for gong, huangzhong for jue, taicu for zheng, guxian for yu), in order to better understand the evolution of music between the beginning and the end of the first millennium B.C.
