Eroi e martiri. La circolazione delle figure celebri della rivoluzione napoletana nell'Europa liberale, 1820-1825

Abstract : The article analyses the construction of heroic figures during the Neapolitan revolution of 1820-21 and during the following exile of those revolutionaries in Spain, Greece, France and Great Britain. In particular, the contribution examines the cult of martyrs (dead or still alive) which was created around central figures of the Nonimestre (especially Guglielmo Pepe). These key personalities emerged as the first transnational revolutionary celebrities within the liberal European community. Thanks to the mobility of these heroes and martyrs one can individuate a transnational socio-geographic space of a globalized revolution. Within the European public sphere, this space constituted a «liberal counter-world» that was able to break the institutional framework of the Restauration and to evoke a territorial political crisis.
