ENTRE ENGAGEMENT ET ALLÉGEANCE : Historicisation du politique au Sénégal

Abstract : The special case of Senegal is used to present an alternative approach to the functionalist views applied to the study of contemporary patronage systems. Rationalist theories are criticized by analyzing the genealogy of the concept of factionalism and using the results of fieldwork conducted in the Senegal delta area. At the local level, political allegiances depend on historical and emotionally backed alliances, which weigh more on political coalitions than do interests.
