Quelques remarques autour de l’expression de la modalité « pouvoir » en arabe contemporain

Abstract : This paper examines the different modes of expression of deontic and epistemic modality in contemporary Arabic. There are many verbs that support these modalities. What is exactly their distribution in the language ? This corpus-based study shows that certain verbs are reserved for the expression of deontic modality (to allow, to permit), others to epistemic modality (judging that it is possible to do something). Comparing the use of amkana / yumkinu and istaṭāʿa / yastaṭīʿu, we find that the distinction between these verbs is not semantic but rather pragmatic, one more oriented towards the expression of possibility than the other. Finally, semantic and pragmatic distribution of different modality markers will be schematically tabulated, according to an argumentative axis ranging from the negation of possible to the possible.
