Une idée du luxe en contexte paysan : le cas des villages protobyzantins du ğebel Zawiyé (Massif calcaire de Syrie du Nord)

Abstract : Situated between the Oronte and the Afrin Valleys to the west and the plain of Aleppo to the east, the remains of early Byzantine rural settlements in the limestone hills of northern Syria are long renowned for their exceptional state of conservation. Recent studies of fifteen villages on the top of Jabal Zawiya, between Apamene and Antiochene, have shed light on several features of the rural domestic architecture of this area and its development between the 4th and the 6th century A.D. Through an examination of this rural community’s living environment, we aim to highlight material signs linked to a desire for luxury and to identify their cultural reference(s).
