Luxus et pompa La notion de luxe d’après trois portraits de « barbares » dans la Correspondance de Sidoine Apollinaire

Abstract : Applying a concept such as “luxury” to Roman Antiquity poses specific methodological problems, as there is no equivalent word in Latin. Using three descriptions of “barbarians” in the Correspondence of Sidonius Apollinaris (the nuptial pompa of Ricimer, the public and private table of Theodoric, and the wedding procession of Sigismer) we will show that it is possible, though with necessary caution, to project the idea of “luxury” on the late Roman world. At different times and under very different circumstances, luxury can sometimes be controlled in the manner of a Roman aristocrat, at other times be evidence of a balance of power that is no longer to the Empire’s advantage.
