De la compilation au centon. Les emprunts à Arnold de Saxe dans l’Hortus sanitatis : quels intermédiaires ?

Abstract : Sometimes, the literature still presents the encyclopaedia De floribus rerum naturalium of Arnold of Saxony as a direct source of Hortus sanitatis. This is not the case, although the mineralogical documentation of Arnold of Saxony is highly present in the compendium of the late 15th century. Actually, all the quotes come either from Speculum naturale of Vincent de Beauvais (Book VIII), extensively exploited by the compiler, or from Albertus Magnus’ De mineralibus, itself “mediated” by Pandectae of Matteus Silvaticus, which are the second main source of Hortus. Sometimes the De virtutibus herbarum, lapidum et animalium attributed to Albert the Great is also used by the compiler. In addition, the debt of Hortus vis-à-vis the encyclopedic tradition of the 13th century is here emphasized. Relationships between sources of Hortus and Gart der Gesundheit are also enlightened from selected examples. Furthermore, we show that the manuscript dated 1477, sold by the antiquarian Rosenthal in the early 20th century, and presented as a witness of the Hortus, is to identify with Ms. Berlin Staatsbibl. Preussisch. Kulturbesitz, lat. oct. 342, and that it is a collection of excerpts from the Speculum naturale.
