Provence during the protohistoric period: historiographical illusion or archaeological reality?
Provence protohistorique, chimère historiographique ou réalité archéologique ?
Résumé
Protohistoric Provence, from the left bank of the Rhône to the current Italian border, and from the Mediterranean coastline to the southern half of French Alps, was, very early and quickly, distinguished from the Celtic sphere by specific research orientations. Is Provence in the Iron Age (7th to 2nd century BCE) really a specific and homogeneous space, distinct from the central European domain? Based on a new compilation of available archaeological data, we will produce an accurate presentation of those aspects, in order to answer those questions while measuring the real distance to the Celtic world.
La Provence protohistorique, allant de la rive gauche du Rhône à la frontière italienne actuelle, et du littoral méditerranéen à la moitié sud des Alpes françaises, a été, très tôt et rapidement, détachée de la sphère celtique par des orientations spécifiques de la recherche. À tort ou à raison ? La Provence à l’âge du Fer (du VIIe au IIe siècle av. J.-C.) est-elle vraiment un espace spécifique et homogène, distinct du domaine centre-européen ? Sur la base d’une nouvelle compilation des corpus archéologiques disponibles, nous proposons ici un discours actualisé sur la question, afin de répondre à cette question tout en mesurant la distance réelle au monde celtique.
