GENDER STUDIES et domination masculine. Les citoyennes de l'Athènes classique, un défi pour l'historien des institutions

Abstract : This article pertains to an open debate, started in October 2017 in this journal, and concerning our modern understanding of ancient citizenship as well as the place held by free women, as legitimate members of the civic community, within the social apparatus. The argument aims to underline a modern paradox: that our scholarship factors in, on the one hand, the existence of an ancient lexicon for women citizens and of an emic conception of citizenship-which certainly bears few resemblances to our own-and, on the other, a treatment of individuals based on gender distinction and in the name of a supposed obvious masculine domination that is never challenged. Can the historian of institutions historicise both the notion of citizenship and the notion of gender categories? The article shows how, from this point of view, it may be productive to make use of a historical methodology that selects its material of study without a priori assumptions, and to consider the results obtained in the field of gender studies, in order to move beyond aporia and to properly account for the facts observed in other periods.
