Abstract : Nestled among the musical texts, the cosmological chapters (VIII, IX, X, XI) in Ms. Montecassino 318 seem like intruders. However, their presence is justified in the mind of the compiler, as they are devoted to « measure », which is part of the Quadrivium within the « science of numbers ». These chapters, written in an uncertain Latin, are edited here for the first time, with a French translation and commentary. Chapter VIII contains a world map with 9 zones, which has never been previously recorded. Accompanied by exegetical and liturgical references, it represents a mystical geography. Chapter IX is a new witness of chapter 61 in the Liber Nemroth de astronomia, which treats abysses and inspired a scientific question of Michael Scot’s Liber particularis. The Liber Nemroth is a cosmological dialogue between the teacher Nimrod and his disciple Ioanton in the tradition of ancient problemata, and it has parallel sources in Syrian texts inspired by Genesis. The Liber appears to have been known at Montecassino since the tenth century. Chapter X of Montecassino 318 treats the outward appearance of the world (De similitudine mundi) and its sources are unknown. Chapter XI, on the rainbow, is a witness of chapter 31 of Isidore’s De natura rerum.
