« Des chrétiens engagés pour la paix entre la Perse et Byzance. L’ambassade du catholicos Īšoʿyahb de Gdala »

Abstract : Between the 5th and the 7th centuries, Persian rulers did not hesitate to associate Christians to many embassies to the Byzantine Empire. These diplo¬matic missions give evidence of the deep integration of Christians into Iranian society, and of the prestige of their elites closely related to political authorities. A particularly representative example is the successful embassy of the Catholicos Īšōʿyahb II of Gdala to the court of Heraclius in 630; nevertheless, it was also one of the most controversial. A re-reading of the literary and historical sources on this event is necessary so as to reconsider the narratives reflecting religious dissents within the Church of the East.
