This work has as object of study the struggles for housing and better living conditions in “Canoas, RS”, between the years of 1980 and 2014. It focuses attention on the historical process of the occupation of land belonging to a Jockey Club, located in the “Mathias Velho” district, that later became the “Vila União dos Operários”. The residents struggled for 34 years to pass from occupants to owners of their lots. To conduct the research, written and oral sources produced from focal groups were used. Theoretically, the work is based on premises of Social History and Urban History, and in Urban Sociology and Anthropology, dialoguing through the concept of social memory. We found the formation of a social movement of struggle that culminated in the legal possession of an urban territory, the sharing of lots and the presence of sociability in the construction of urban equipments and houses.
