Le Novum Glossarium Mediae Latinitatis et les sources documentaires

Abstract : Understanding private charters and documents of Medieval Europe presupposes the availability of relevant research tools. In its universalistic ambition, the project of the « Dictionnaire du Latin médiéval (Medieval Latin Dictionary) » that has been carried out by the International Union of Academies (IUA) since the 1920s did not ignore diplomatic texts, quite the contrary, they constitute an important part of its sources. The paper starts with a brief presentation of the Novum Glossarium Mediae Latinitatis (NGML), its associated interactive encyclopedia project, and the role that charters and diplomas play in the documentation of the NGML. Then, we show how the NGML treats three lemmas which are typically found in diplomatic texts. Finally, we return to the extreme difficulty of reconstructing the meaning of the Medieval Latin words and argue that their interpretation should be always accompanied by a corpus analysis. We also briefly present the portal “medialatinitas.eu”.
