A Critical Edition and an Annotated Translation of the Akanāṉūṟu

The Akanāṉūṟu is an anthology of four hundred long poems (12-30 lines) on love (akam) that belongs to the Eight Collections (eṭṭuttokai) of the Classical Tamil Caṅkam corpus. Its fi rst book, Kaḷiṟṟiyāṉainirai (“Row of Bull Elephants”), comprising the fi rst one-hundredtwenty poems, is here critically re-edited on the basis of the surviving eight manuscripts – among which fi ve are fairly old palm-leaf copies – and of the numerous quotations found in the grammatical tradition. A special layout has been developed to allow the synoptic representation of both extant transmission strands. The edition is accompanied by an interlinear English version and by an annotated translation. The introduction (in English and in Tamil) discusses in detail the history of the text and the editing procedure. Volume 3 comprises an edition of the old commentary, a complete analytical concordance, a glossary and several indexes.

L’Akanāṉūṟu est une anthologie de quatre cents poèmes longs (de 12 à 30 lignes) qui traitent de l’amour (akam). Elle fait partie du groupe des « Huit Anthologies » (eṭṭuttokai), qui est l’une des composantes de la littérature tamoule classique appelée « Littérature du Caṅkam ». L’édition critique présentée ici couvre la première section de cette anthologie, traditionnellement appelée Kaḷiṟṟiyāṉainirai (« Rangée d’éléphants de guerre »), qui contient 120 poèmes. Elle a été préparée sur la base des huit manuscrits conservés et des nombreuses citations du texte dans la littérature grammaticale tamoule. Une mise en page spéciale représente de façon synoptique les deux lignes de transmission. L’édition critique du texte est accompagnée d’une version interlinéaire en anglais et d’une traduction annotée. L’introduction discute en détail l’histoire du texte et la procédure éditoriale. Le troisième volume comprend le commentaire ancien, suivi d’une concordance complète, d’un glossaire ainsi que de plusieurs index.
