La syntaxe des appels aux vivants

Abstract : This paper endeavours to give an overview of the syntax of the so-called Appeal to the Living Ones for the whole pharaonic period. We enlighten some ideological features behind the evolution of the formula. Indeed, the search for a specific rhetoric, still in progress during the Old Kingdom, may illustrate either the choice for uniformisation and synthesis or the taste for diversity, calling for several levels of reading. In our handbooks of the Egyptian language, the Appeal has been too often dismissed as a rather frozen formula as far as its syntax is concerned. This idea may have led to a underestimating of some inner qualities of the formula: its flexibility, its ability to express many trends and to open up to intertextuality. Nonetheless, our article will also underline some difficulties, which occurred while analysing the syntax.
