Naturalising the Supernatural in a French Reformation Morality

This article proposes that a little-known French morality, _Tragique comedie francoise de l'homme justifié par Foy_ (1554), by Henri de Barran, intended to serve as a vehicle for Reformist doctrine, can shed light on certain tendencies found within contemporary English interludes, as indeed within the later Elizabethan theatre. In particular, the absence within it of an allegorical personage representing conscience on stage points to the coming to consciousness of sin and the repentance that follows as profoundly internalised processes. Thus, across the resemblances and contrasts that it presents with the English plays discussed, one is led to perceive a significant intertext, which has never been signalled as such, bearing on the evolution of the English theatre under the influence of the Reformation.
Le présent essai propose l’idée qu’une moralité française peu connue, Tragique comedie francoise de l’homme iustifié par Foy (1554), due à Henri de Barran, lié au courant de la Réforme, peut éclairer certaines tendances s’exprimant dans les interludes anglais contemporains, comme dans certaines pièces du théâtre élisabethain plus tardif. En particulier, on peut y voir qu’en l’absence d’un personnage allégorique représentant la conscience sur scène, la prise de conscience du péché et le repentir qui est associé deviennent des processus dûment internalisés.
Ainsi, à travers les ressemblances et contrastes qu’elle présente avec les pièces anglaises, on en vient à voir dans cette moralité française un intertexte significatif, ce qui n’a jusqu’ici jamais été signalé, portant sur l’évolution du théâtre anglais sous l’influence de la Réforme.
