The Claude Lefort’s concept of power as an empty place. Paradoxes of the modern democratic society

In the introduction to the French translation of The Creation of The American Republic 1776-1787 of Gordon WOOD (University of North Carolina Press, 1969, Fr. transl. Belin, 1991), Claude LEFORT stresses the proximity of the analysis made therein with his own reading of modern democratic phenomenon. Far from seeing in the modern democracy a simple change of government, Cl. LEFORT is describing it as inventing a new form of society in which power can’t be embodied in a defined point. But in so doing, in an opposite way to the classic monarchic government, the reference to the Law and to the common good are also detached from it ; which inaugurates a politics in which the power, the Law and the good no longer return to stated references. The modern democratic society inaugurate a politic life where the power, the legislative competence and the capacity of saying what is the general interest no longer return to stated a precise and determined origin. Repeating the strong arguments that led the Americans to choose a federal Constitution, we extend to show, through the analysis of Cl. Lefort, how modernity has made of the power an empty place.
Dans l’introduction qu’il fait à la traduction française de l’ouvrage de Gordon WOOD, La création de la république américaine 1776-1787 (1969, trad. fr. F. DELASTRE, Belin, 1991), Claude LEFORT signale la proximité des analyses qui y sont faites avec sa propre lecture du phénomène démocratique moderne. Loin de voir dans la démocratie moderne un simple changement de gouvernement, Cl. LEFORT la décrit comme inventant une nouvelle forme de société dans laquelle le pouvoir ne peut plus s’incarner en un point défini. Mais ce faisant, les deux références à la loi (ou au droit) et au bien commun qui s’y trouvaient cristallisées pour constituer le triptyque monarchique s’en trouvent aussi détachées. La société démocratique moderne inaugure ainsi une vie politique dans laquelle le pouvoir, la compétence législative et la capacité à formuler l’intérêt général ne renvoient plus à une origine précisément identifiable et déterminée. En reprenant les arguments déterminants ayant conduit les Américains à choisir une Constitution fédérale, nous souhaitons illustrer concrètement, grâce aux analyses lefortiennes, la façon dont la modernité a procédé à la dématérialisation du pouvoir.
